Global Expert Review of EPGs

In 2005 Serco ExperienceLab (UK) led an Global Expert Review of EPG’s for a leading UK broadcaster. The study involved UXalliance partners across the UK, Germany, America, France and Japan. Thirteen EPG’s were examined over the 5 countries, drawn from a mix of satellite, cable and other platforms.

The objective of the research was to explore the mix of design approaches currently on offer, to assess the relative strengths of the clients EPG, and to identify key opportunities for improvement in the future. Each EPG was assessed on areas including: remote control design, clarity of menu screens, A-Z listings, Accessibility and integration with PVR function, if featured.

Having analysed the review findings from each country Serco ExperienceLab produced a comprehensive report outlining the relative strengths of each EPG design approach, and recommendations for future design improvements. From this the client was able to quickly understand the competitive landscape, gain advantage from lessons learned, and produce an EPG that was “best in class.”
