'Personas in Cross- Cultural Projects' To Be Presented at HWID 2009

Friday, October 2, 2009

During the conference she will present two papers and participate in a panel on Cultural Usability Themes together with Prof. Torkil Clemmensen, Dept. of Informatics, CBS, Denmark, Prof. Andy Smith, Head, School of Computing, Faculty of Professional Studies, Thames Valley University, London, UK, and Prof. Pradeep Yammiyavar, Department of Design, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, India

The paper ‘Personas in Cross-Cultural Projects’ presents a small scale research project and shows that it is quite easy for the Persona-writer to incorporate implicit and culturally loaded information. The readers used their own background when trying to understand the persona description and they used persons in their immediate surroundings in order to relate to the persona description. When reading a description the readers use two different strategies when depicting the persona; either interpreting or looking for clues in the description. Especially the interpretation strategy and the use of known persons might create unintended results in cross-cultural projects and points to, how crucial it is to get the descriptions verified by locals.

The paper ’Exploring Persona-Scenarios - Using Storytelling to Identify Requirements’ is written together Sabine Madsen, RUC, explores the persona-scenario method as a means to support project participants in generating shared understandings and design ideas. And the paper contributes with conceptual guidelines that delineate a) what a design-oriented persona-scenario should consist of (product) and b) how to write it (procedure) in order to generate and validate as many, new, and shared understandings and design ideas as possible (purpose).
